Solid insulated busbar system

The solid insulated busbar system (SIS) manufactured by RITZ Instrument Transformers GmbH, provides touch safe and reliable connections between medium voltage equipment, while being a cost-effective alternative to parallel-connected cable systems, metal enclosed bus ducts or cable bus systems.

Because of its compact design, low space requirements and small bending radius, SIS is a suitable solution especially for the transmission of higher current or/and in case of limited space.

The solid insulated busbar system (SIS) is designed for indoor, outdoor or combined applications up to 40.5 kV and maximum 8000 A, for ambient temperature ranges from -60°C to +55°C.

The busbars comprise of conductor material, aluminum or copper, composite insulation of epoxy resin impregnated paper with embedded capacitive grading layers and earthing layer, covered by an outer surface of shrinking sleeve for indoor or stainless-steel pipe for outdoor.

The length of the individual busbars is limited by the manufacturing process, transportation and installation conditions, thus, for complex installations the busbars have to be connected.

The connection is performed with flexible connectors between the busbars to allow thermal expansion and to compensate for tolerances during installation. These joints are fully insulated by connection sleeves, which cover the busbar ends.

For the SIS installation, a flexible mounting system is used for fixing the bus bars, so adjustments can easily be done at site. The fixing elements are adjustable with respect to each other and adjustable in all directions therefore allowing compensation for building tolerances.

A separate earthing installation dimensioned in accordance with the required short circuit current has to be provided in parallel to the busbar system. Every single busbar, connection sleeve and metallic fixation material has to be connected to that earthing installation.

RITZ Instrument Transformers GmbH offers support for designing of the SIS according to the customers’ requirements and guides customers from the conceptual planning stage through to the commissioning of the SIS connections.
